I was researching old school MMO's and found Yserbius, one of the first graphical mmo's from the 90's. The copy I have is a re-release that
works without the old Sierra Online service which oobviously doesn't exist anymore. But I see others have tried to reverse engineer the network.
I wonder how hard it would be to get working with my BBS. IE. set up a
door that will run whatever protocol the old network ran. I really don't
need to add more projects to my list, but this might be fun. OR, maybe something to get Neverwinter Nights (1991) working "online".

Anyway, this post is just me brainstorming.

Ouch, I ran a packet sniffer on the existing server. It doesn't look
as simple as I thought it would be for 1991.

I do know there are several projects likes this out there. I can't remember of the top of my head what it was called but I seem to remember that there was a massive project that was designed to be a universal cross connectivity server for older games.

I do know there is a blizzard battle.net server for the old game to make them not have the awful requirements to keep an account. I have one and its pretty nice.

I remember one for Guildwars but pretty sure it was never fully realized.

It can be fun if you do get one it won't really be something you can just hook up to the BBS but can be something that is advertised there.

INNBarn is the current iteration. It seems to work ok, but it's closed
source and they haven't released the protocol.

Actually it would be easy for INN, you would just open the door, drop
the terminal, and load the software as it would just take over the COM
port. At least it would work on my OS, not sure about FreeDOS or MSDOS.

Anyway, it's too complicated without reference, so it's off my radar.

Interesting. I'll have to see what else there is out there. I'm trying
to stay retro, so pre-2000 is kind of my target. Battle.net would be
    cool.

Well hit me up on MRC some time after work I typically get on around 6ish CST were -5GMT. I'll get the links I collected for that one together for ya. its a combo of 4 servers that work together to make it work. It does come with a program to do almost all of the inital setup for you.

I think what I'm going to do is write something from scratch. It'll be
easier to build something for my own homebew games when I can build
the protocol as I need it.

    To which Commodore Clifford replies...

That would be an interesting project. I cut my teeth on Ultima Online..
I'd heard of Meridian 51, but never that one.

Ultima Online was definately the first MMO I ever played. I loved that
game. I'd played MUDs before, but the whole graphical thing totally
hooked me. I supposed that's why I'm interested in these older MMO's. I
haven't really researched Meridian 51 yet, maybe I'll take a look at it
    today.
