How do kidneys manage hydration if you're drinking fluids other than water?
To your kidneys, there is no such thing as coffee, juice, or soda. They never actually
process beverages they only filter the blood those drinks eventually become.
The chemical compound
H2O
does not change just because it enters your body mixed with fruit sugars, caffeine, or
chicken broth.
Before the kidneys get involved, the digestive system handles the beverage. The
stomach and intestines act as a biological sieve, separating water molecules from
sugars, salts, and flavorings, and absorbing them into the bloodstream.
By the time the fluid reaches the circulatory system, the original beverage no longer
exists. It is simply an increase in total blood volume and a change in blood solute
concentration.
