Exercise doesn't just burn calories it performs a physiological magic trick. It opens a
hidden cellular "backdoor" that absorbs blood sugar completely independent of insulin.
Under normal conditions, getting glucose from the bloodstream into a muscle cell
requires insulin. When blood sugar rises, the pancreas releases insulin, which acts like a
key. It binds to receptors on the cell, unlocking a transporter protein called GLUT4 and
allowing glucose to flow inside. In a body with insulin resistance, these receptors do not
respond properly. The body pumps out more insulin, but the locks are jammed, leaving
glucose trapped in the blood.
Exercise circumvents this broken system entirely. When a muscle contracts, it requires
immediate energy and cannot wait for insulin to do its job. The physical stress of muscle
contraction activates an enzyme called AMPK. This pathway forces GLUT4 transporters
directly to the cell surface, bypassing the jammed locks entirely.
