• What music are belong to you?

From Lodger@WMUTE to All on Thu Apr 1 21:26:45 2010
    Hi there,

this discussion is about what kind of music you are listening to and, if you're also a musician, how this is an influence no your creative work. What kind of music are you playing and how did you get interested in music in gerneral?

I used to play bass in our school band but never really became a professional musician. Still, I do use GarageBand from time to time, mixing C64 game loops with other samples / loops. I don't know if this counts as being creative, but I enjoy doing that kind of stuff. Also, I still know the basics of playing bass and sometimes practice for an hour or two, enjoyig the feel of that old Fender Jazz Bass replica I own. It's blues I used to play back then and it's blues I play and practice which is quite rare these days.

When I play music, the music I play often sounds like classic rock, and sometimes folk music (and indeed, I often like to try to play songs that were originally done by classic rock groups). I also like to play electronic music. Those have always been two of my favorite music genres, including classic rock bands such as The Beatles, Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd, The Doobie Brothers, Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler, Rush, and others. Growing up, I was also exposed to some electronic music (created using synthesizers) and grew to enjoy that type of music too. In addition, I also enjoy listening to 80s music, some alternative, and also what is often referred to as "adult contemporary" (which usually consists of soft rock and soft pop).

That's cool. :) I've been playing guitar (usually by myself) for about 16 years, and more recently I've also started playing piano/synthesizers more. I've occasionally done some song recording on my computer (I even wrote my own multi-track recording software as a senior project in college), but I've also used GarageBand and really enjoy using that software. I also have a Roland Juno-G synthesizer, which features a multi-track recorder that lets you record up to 16 MIDI tracks and 4 regular audio tracks in a song. More recently I think I've been playing my synthesizer more often than my guitars. :)

Ya, I'm a big Beatles fan too...Like Paul, but John was my favorite. Gotta have Floyd, I dig the Doobie Brothers (Mostly just Black Water, tho), can't stand Dire Straights, just now getting into Rush...

Hell, I'm just a "Modern Rock" kinda guy...only you can't really call it "Modern" anymore...hell, it's all stuff that I listened to when I was a teen in the 80's...

-Has anyone ever noticed that my taglines are usually song lyrics?

When I was a kid, my dad used to listen to all those great bands of the 70s and 80s such as Genesis, Pink Floyd and Santana. He used to play those tapes permanently on his car stereo, taking us kids with him on his weekely shopping duty. This kind of set up my musical background for many years. I used to listen to bands like Rush, Marillion and also enjoyed bands like AC/DC, Iron Maiden. But that was in the early 80s. Today I listen to all styles of music, including electronic music (but not counting euro-techno and techno).
I'm more into independent or alternative music at the moment. My musical preferences changed radically after finding out about a band called "The Clash" when I was 13. :)

That reminds me, I like some techno too. One of the bands I like to listen to is Kraftwerk - although my favorite stuff from them has been their music from "The Mix" and live concerts they've done. I have both the English and German releases of "The Mix" on CD.. I had to buy the German version on eBay from someone in Germany, as it isn't easily available in the US here. :)

Yes, Kraftwerk come from my hometown, Duesseldorf. They are one of the few popular, international bands from here. I like some of their music but don't have any of their records (shame on me). I guess a lot of modern music like tripop, goa etc. has its roots in the music Kraftwerk played.

Maybe you remember Propaganda, another band from here that gained international attention for a short time. And of course there is the german punkband "Die Toten Hosen" who are also known througout europe and south america. All those bands started their (sometimes quite short) careers in Duesseldorf in the late 1970s, early 1980s.

But unfortunately, there is no longer a vital "music scene" like there was in these days. There still are some bands, but today it's very expensive to find room for rehearsals and if you do, you will have to play in a lousy, rotten loft or something like that.

Hell, I've got EVERYTHING AC/DC did up until like 2 years ago & I *NEVER* listen to it....Seriously...they do wonders with the same 4, 5 or 6 chords... Almost everything is in the key of E...or A....but they do it well... I can't believe that they've tricked so many people into loving them despite their inherant LACK OF TALENT.

Damn...I haven't heard the name Kraftwerk since the 80's...If you like them you might like Thomas Dolby, maybe Herbie Hancock...The Art of Noise (A MUST HEAR)...Hell, I can't remember it all...my friend used to listen to that when I was into Madness & sh*t...

anyway, if you take anything from this post...listen to The Art of Noise...

Unfortunately I know very little of German music besides Nina Haagen & nena (99 luftbaloons)...However, I do have some friends that like the *HEAVY* industrial band "Einstreusende Neubauten" - Couldn't stand them myself...Made me want to jump off a cliff... But there is a band from MY hometown known as "Victim's Family" they actually made it bigger in Germany than anywhere else...they toured there for like a year and a half before they got homesick & came back to the SF bay area. Anyway...

...Did you know that every song that John Lennon played on harmonica in all The Beatles recordings is on a mouth harp he stole from a music store in Hamburg? When the store found out about it (round about '68), he said, "Well, at least he put it to good use."

Yes, that's a good example. Those Jazz guys were kind of far aheaed at their time. And they inspired a lot of other musical styles like (e.g.) latin folk music to "crossover" and create a new sound.

Which is exactly the reason I use this alias. I've borrowed it from that Album and I hope, Mr. Bowie doesn't care. A strange album it is, but I like it.

That's probably why my Dad never gave me too much sh*t about my music when I was a kid 'cept when he came into my bedroom one time & saw a picture of Robert Smith (the Cure), and he had his hair all hair-sprayed up, was wearing white face paint, eyeliner & lipstick & he said, "Get that f*ckin picture of that damn fag off that wall!"

I don't remember Propoganda, but I've heard of Die Toten Hosen. Didn't they do the song "Maenner Sind Schweiner"? Or was that another group? I remember hearing that song when I visited Germany in 1998.

A funny thing is that there were a few German songs that were somewhat popular on US radio in the 80s, but I had never noticed them until I returned from Germany in 1998.. I think Falco's "Der Komissar" got some airplay on US radio in the 80s (although the English version by After The Fire seems like it was played more here). Also, Nena's "99 Luftballoons" (and her English version more so) have been played on the radio in the US. I don't know why, but I had never noticed those songs until after I came back to the US from Germany.. I hadn't heard of Falco until I went to Germany and someone I knew there had his "Out of the Dark (Into the Light)" CD, which had recently been released then. I bought that CD myself, and I enjoy it.. I like some of Falco's earlier music from the 80s too (i.e., "Vienna Calling"). It's sad that Falco died just months before his "Out of the Dark" CD was released. :( I read that he died in a car accident while on vacation.
